Harvey the conductor

Sculpture | Flour, Water, Papier-mâché | 5ft 9” |

Harvey, the railroad conductor, was Peggy’s first sculpture of a life-sized person and was created for the New Canaan Garden Club in 1974. The request to create Harvey was made by Allison Carver Caesar, an acquaintance of Peggy’s mother and the wife of renowned sculptor, Harry A. Caesar. 

Harry didn’t work with papier-mâché so Allison asked Peggy if she would consider taking on the project. Peggy accepted, even though she had never created a life-size sculpture before.

She embraced the challenge to create something she’d never crafted before. Peggy needed some structural assistance from her very talented woodworking father to help create a strong and sturdy framework.

Together they built Harvey’s frame, allowing the conductor to take form. Harvey was “born” with a red velvet heart placed inside his chest and a human hair wig beneath his cap. 

From then on, a heart has been applied to all of Peggy’s work as an expression of the joy of life.

Jewelee The Sea Glass Turtle

Jewelee’s main inspiration was the decorative sea glass that adorned her shell. After long walks on the beach collecting sea glass, Peggy thought of using this material in one of her sculptures. The different hues of blue and green make for a beautiful and unique shell. Jewelee is a gem of the sea!

Petey the pelican

Petey is a charming, handsome, and realistic life-sized pelican. The sculpting technique used to create Petey, including his wings and his eyes, creates hyper-realistic effects and makes you forget that he is a sculpture…there is a definite twinkle in his eye!
